The Growing Actors’ Approach
I have many goals for my students at Growing Actors. My goals are informed by my experience as an actor auditioning and working onset and all my studies of acting methods. My goals are also based on my experience as an acting teacher and a student of early childhood development and the teachings of Madga Gerber.
I have found fostering autonomy and strengthening an individual’s intrinsic joy are the most important goals for all my students and keys that I strive to give. These goals enable future actors to find their unique truth in material they are provided and consistently be able to be “in the moment.” I find these goals enable students who want to eventually become engineers or lawyers or writers to think for themselves, to have confidence in their unique ideas and truly enjoy and find the artistry in their future paths.
I have always felt all creativity stems from the need for connection and expression but also from our own personal observations and interpretations of life. Often I have found, sadly, that children begin to lose their unique ideas and instead seek out “the right way” or “the right answer.” The goal of Growing Actors classes is to help kids and teens connect to “their right way” and “their very valid answers.” I try to nurture each child’s perceptions, ideas, impressions, interpretations and bring forward their creative ideas with aplomb. Kids and teens need more than ever to trust themselves and foster confidence in expressing themselves.
Each week we explore and build upon acting techniques, character building exercises, empathy through acting exercises, improvisation and storytelling.
I look forward to having you in class,
Robin
